An Integrative Approach to Counseling and Psychotherapy

Integrative Psychotherapy, developed by Mark McMinn and Clark Campbell,is a 3-domain approach that emphasizes symptom-focused functional interventions, schema-focused structural interventions, and longer-term relationally-focused interventions. Although the therapist is continually aware of all three domains, each intervention is crafted according to the particular needs of the client.

Integrative Psychotherapy is integrative in two dimensions: theoretically and theologically. It is theoretically integrative by bringing together ideas from cognitive-behavioral, interpersonal, schema-focused, and relationally-focused interventions. It is theologically integrative by considering a Christian view of persons as it relates to psychological theory and intervention.

The theory of Integrative Psychotherapy will be explained, various treatment techniques described, and a videotaped therapy session will be used to demonstrate essential principles from the functional and structural domains.
