In his book The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat, Dr. Oliver Sacks tells of meeting Madeleine when she was 60 years old. Prior to that meeting, Madeline had been cared for at home by a doting and overprotective family. Hers was not an easy life. You see, Madeleine was born blind and afflicted with cerebral palsy. As if that weren’t enough, Madeleine had a very peculiar problem: she couldn’t use her hands. They didn’t even feel like they were part of her. Sacks began to wonder about the cause, since there was no organic reason for this problem.
